››P'nai Or Mussar Group
Mussar is a path of spiritual practice which was developed over the last thousand years . The movement was founded by the Lithuanian Rabbi Israel Salanter. It tells us that at our core, we are all Holy and it shows us the ways to change those qualities (or character/soul traits) within us that obstruct the light of our holiness from shining through. The practice encourages one to focus on our character/soul traits (ie: equanimity, patience, diligence, calmness, etc) and how to improve them.
Our Mussar group began its journey with the guidance of "Climbing Jacob's Ladder" written by Alan Morinis. We then struggled with an older work, "Cheshbon Hanefesh" ("Accounting of the Soul") written by R. Mendel of Satanov in 1845, which focused on thirteen specific character traits.
Presently, we are experiencing a Buddhist perspective of placing one's priorities and life in order by studying and discussing "One Year to Live" by Stephen Levine.
In general, our group is closed to "drop-ins" due to the confidential nature of our discussions. However, if there is interest in joining our group, we are open to new members who are committed to meeting on a monthly basis once we begin a new text.
Our group meets the first Wednesday of each month at St. Mark's from 7-8:30 pm. For more information
