››P’nai Or’s Sacred Companionship Group
The Sacred Companionship Group welcomes people who are currently ill and would like support, as well as those who wish to be spiritual companions for others. Karen Mitzner and Linda Meretsky facilitate the group, which is enriched by sharing leadership among all members.
Our time together is given, in part, to discussing and processing issues relevant to group members. We also practice softening our fears and opening our hearts through silent meditation, guided visualizations, the reading of sacred poetry, music and singing.
The purposes of our group include to:
- develop a greater capacity for loving, compassionate, non-judgmental presence, both to our own pain and suffering and that of others.
- provide spiritual guidance and support to people who wish to be companions as well as those who are ill or dying.
- help all of us achieve greater equilibrium, inner peace, and spiritual joy as we work on difficult issues.
reduce fear.
- help resolve major forms of spiritual pain—lack of forgiveness, lack of meaning, lack of relatedness, and lack of hope.
- expand our identity beyond our individual selves so that our identity includes communal, global, ecological, and spiritual aspects.
- reconstruct, where necessary, our perceptions of the Divine so that we are able to achieve an intimate, personal, loving relationship with God.
- To normalize and de-stigmatize illness and death.
